The Resilient Family

Practical financial education for families in times of crisis

A clear budget... a stronger family

The idea in one sentence

We help families manage limited income wisely: a written budget, small savings, avoiding debt, and finally an additional source of income.

The problem

Poverty has tripled

Poverty in Lebanon rose from 12% in 2012 to 44% in 2022.

Collapsed purchasing power

The lira lost about 98% of its value by the end of 2023, and about 83% of households had to rely on cheaper or less-preferred food.

No financial literacy

Many families live between two currencies and irregular income, without simple planning tools.

Target groups

  • Middle- and low-income families.
  • Priority for families headed by women.
  • Teenage children in joint sessions.

Methodology

  1. Phase 1 — 6 practical workshops

The family budget in dollars and lira, priorities and spending control, small savings, avoiding debt, and involving children in financial decisions.

  2. Phase 2 — Tools and follow-up

A simple budget notebook or phone app, monthly follow-up for four months, and organising rotating savings groups (“jamaiyya”) with clear rules.

  3. Phase 3 — Additional income

Interested families move into the “Bayt Muntij” programme or study a small project with Al-Inmaa Center's accompaniment.

Success factors

Simple tools

The family needs no prior financial knowledge.

Programme integration

The link with “Bayt Muntij” turns financial awareness into income.

Community trust

The Foundation's long presence in the regions eases discussing a sensitive topic like money.

Challenges and how we address them

Loss of trust in banksSafe community and cash savings tools with written rules.
Sensitivity of talking about moneyComplete confidentiality, and hypothetical examples instead of real family figures.
Irregular incomeFlexible budgets reviewed weekly rather than monthly.

Lessons the project is built on

  • Financial awareness alone is not enough; it must connect to an income opportunity.
  • A family that writes its budget discovers waste it did not see.
  • Our advice: start with tools people already know, like the rotating jamaiyya, and develop them rather than importing foreign tools.

Why it deserves to be showcased

A pressing issue

Inflation and currency collapse are problems many societies live with.

Transferable

Its tools are simple and low-cost.

Links awareness to income

It goes beyond education and opens a path to an additional source of income.

Sustainable Development Goals

Goal 1 (target 1.4) for access to resources and financial services; Goal 5 for supporting women-headed families; Goal 8 (target 8.10) for financial inclusion; Goal 10 for empowering lower-income households.
